Marbella East extends for 20 kilometres east of the downtown area towards Calahonda within the Mijas municipal area. Going from west to east, these are the main residential and resort zones:
- Río Real
- Los Monteros & Bahía de Marbella
- Santa Clara
- El Rosario
- Alicate Playa
- Elviria & Elviria Hills
- Las Chapas & Marbesa
- Cabopino
Rio Real is an attractive upmarket suburb that is well-established but has been expanding recently, with the addition of new gated villa and apartment communities added to the villas, large townhouses and apartments set on leafy streets overlooking one of the most attractive golf courses in Marbella, as it flows along a valley to the sea. The golf and sea views are excellent in this intimate residential area so close to Marbella centre and the La Cañada shopping mall. A top-end new resort hotel and beach club by Four Seasons is planned for this area too.
Los Monteros
Just a Little further along, this beachside residential area that extends towards the sea from the iconic Hotel Los Monteros, is considered the most exclusive address in Marbella East. This is thanks to the quality of the properties and residential area, but also because Los Monteros is one of the few parts of Marbella that can boast frontline beach villas on large estates.
Bahía de Marbella forms the connection between Río Real and Los Monteros, with a series of luxurious apartment complexes right by a wonderfully sandy beach with impressive dunes. Just inland from here is a popular rugby club, with the Costa del Sol hospital near by.
Santa Clara is located just across the coastal road, and is fast acquiring a country club feel with attractive modern gated communities following the meanderings of the local golf courses. From this slight elevation, residents enjoy golf views down to the sea. The main courses here are Santa Clara and the Marbella Golf Club.
El Rosario
An older and more established residential area also set on the inland side of the coastal road, El Rosario offers a blend of larger and medium-sized villas, along with a sprinkling of townhouses and apartments. It is a peaceful suburb with a family feel close to golf courses and the beach, and home to one of the finest tennis clubs and British international schools on the coast.
Alicate Playa extends along the seaside from here towards Elviria, an established coastal suburb with mostly older villas, many of which are being renovated and upgraded to 21st century style and convenience in combination with a prime beachfront suburb setting. The area is also home to a series of fine new developments close to the beach, as well as great choice of restaurants, beach clubs and a beach resort with spa.
Elviria is the largest of the residential areas in Marbella East, and as a result the local hub and reference point for shopping, dining and other professional services. Also dotted with coastal pine, it is made up of three main zones: 1) Beachside Elviria, which consists mainly of well-established apartment and townhouse complexes overlooking the sea, with direct access to the beach, the coastal pathway that connects much of the shoreline in the area, as well as a series of beach clubs and restaurants.
2) Across the coastal road is the inland part of Elviria, where apartments surround the main shopping, dining and nightlife area, rising uphill to 3) Elviria Hills, where luxurious apartments and villas overlook rolling hills and the golf courses of Santa María and the pretty nine-hole Greenlife Golf down towards the sea.
Continue a little further east along the coastal highway, and you come to Las Chapas, where elegant villas stand amid coastal pine groves on the inland side of the road, with Marbesa forming the point of reference in a beachside location. It is an established area with older villas of which many are now being renovated.
Cabopino marks the eastern boundary of Marbella, where it meets the municipality of Mijas at Calahonda. It is the site of a golf course, the prettiest marina on the Costa del Sol, a protected coastal reserve consisting of dunes, beaches, umbrella pine and offshore ecosystem, along with a nudist beach, restaurants, cafés and shops – all overlooked by an ancient beachside watchtower.
